Surviving the Undead NightZombies • ZombieHorde • ZombieHunter
Zombies are a core part of Rusting Away. This guide explains when they show up, why nights are scarier, what to bring, and the mistakes that get players wiped.
At a Glance
The zombie rules of survival in one screen.
Day vs Night
Days are manageable. Nights can spike danger fast (NightZombies).
Hordes Happen
Some encounters come in waves (ZombieHorde). Don’t over-commit.
Bring the Right Kit
A “cheap, reliable” loadout beats fancy gear with no meds.
Farm Smart
Pick terrain, control line-of-sight, and keep an exit plan.
When Do Zombies Spawn?
What to expect as you roam the map.
On Rusting Away, zombies can appear during regular roaming and/or as part of special encounters. Nights are typically when the undead become more aggressive and noticeable (NightZombies), and you may see bigger groups during horde activity (ZombieHorde).
Common zombie “hot moments”
- Nighttime roaming and surprise encounters
- Open roads / open terrain where you’re exposed
- After you make noise (fighting, farming, moving fast)
- Horde-style moments where more appear in waves
What this means for you
- Plan to be indoors or positioned before night hits
- Carry extra meds if you roam at night
- Always keep stamina + an exit route
- Don’t assume “it’s just one” — hordes can snowball
Night Zombies vs Day Zombies
Why nights feel different (and how to handle them).
Daytime (generally)
- Better visibility = easier kiting and headshots
- More time to react and reposition
- Great for learning zombie behavior safely
Nighttime (NightZombies)
- Visibility drops — zombies close distance faster
- Mistakes punish harder (missed shots, bad stamina)
- Safer to fight from controlled positions
Best Weapons & Loadouts
Bring reliable tools — not just expensive ones.
Beginner kit
- Reliable ranged weapon (anything you can feed ammo)
- Bandages + a few healing items
- Flashlight / weapon light
Mid-game kit
- Ranged weapon + extra ammo stack
- Better healing + spare clothing
- Tools for doors/cover (build plan optional)
Night / horde kit
- More meds than you think you need
- Light source + situational awareness
- Space for loot (don’t get overweight)
Core Tactics That Keep You Alive
These work even when settings change.
ZombieHorde: Handling Waves Like a Pro
Hordes punish greed — play them smart.
ZombieHorde-style moments mean you can face multiple zombies in quick succession. The key is to avoid getting boxed in, and to fight from a location where you can retreat and reset. If you’re not confident, treat horde moments like a “mini event.”
Best horde positions
- High ground with a clear escape route
- Near cover you can loop around
- Open enough to see them coming
Worst horde positions
- Tight alleys and dense forests
- Inside unfinished bases
- Anywhere you can be surrounded
ZombieHunter: Make Kills Count
Progression, targets, or rewards tied to zombie kills.
With ZombieHunter, zombies aren’t just a threat — they’re an opportunity. Depending on server setup, you may see kill tracking, targets, bounties, or rewards tied to hunting the undead.
Common Mistakes (That Get You Killed)
Avoid these and you’ll feel unstoppable.
Roaming at night with no light
If you can’t see, you can’t control distance. Always bring a light source.
No meds / no stamina plan
Zombies win long fights. Carry healing and keep sprint for escapes.
Fighting in tight spaces
Forests/alleys trap you. Use terrain that supports retreat and vision.
Tunnel-vision on loot
Loot after you’re safe. Greed is the #1 reason hordes wipe players.
