Backpacks, Kits & QoL Plugins Explained (So It Doesn’t Feel “Pay-to-Win”)
Rusting Away runs a few quality-of-life plugins to reduce grind and keep PvE smooth — but they can be confusing if you’ve never used them before. We also offer VIP and Premium options as an optional way to support the server. They’re never required to play, progress, or enjoy the full PvE experience. This guide explains how backpacks work, what kits exist, common QoL commands, and how we separate balanced gameplay from pure convenience.
At a Glance
What these systems do (and what they don’t do).
Backpacks = extra carry
Extra storage to cut down “run-home-every-5-minutes” gameplay — great for farming and events.
Kits = quick start / role loadouts
Kits are preset loadouts (starter / utility / event-ready). They’re designed to save time, not delete progression.
QoL commands = less friction
Teleports, building helpers, and utility commands reduce busywork so you can actually play PvE content.
Fairness is the line
We separate “convenience” from “power.” If something becomes unfair, it gets adjusted or removed.
How Backpacks Work
Extra storage for farming, events, and looting — with sensible limits.
We use Backpacks to give players extra storage space. It’s meant to reduce tedious trips, especially on PvE runs where you’re collecting components, ammo, and materials. It’s not meant to replace base storage or let you “bank” infinite loot on your character.
Common backpack actions
- Open: usually
/backpackor/bp - Store: drag items in like a normal container
- Retrieve: drag items out when you need them
- Play smart: treat it like carry convenience, not a vault
Fair-play expectations
- Backpacks are for carry convenience, not “infinite safety.”
- If you die, settings may limit what stays accessible (varies by server config).
- Don’t use backpacks to “ninja-loot” around other players during events.
- If staff sees abuse, we’ll adjust limits/cooldowns.
What Kits Are Available
Quick loadouts that reduce downtime — not progression.
We use Kits to provide preset loadouts. On a PvE server, kits mainly solve two problems: (1) getting new players into the action faster, and (2) reducing “gear-reset” downtime after you get clapped by NPCs. Some kits may be tied to VIP/Premium as an optional supporter perk, but the goal stays the same: save time — not replace progression or create an unfair advantage.
Starter / Fresh Spawn
Basic tools and supplies so you can place a starter base, craft, and begin progressing without frustration.
- Usually a few basic tools
- Light food/meds
- Sometimes a basic weapon for early PvE (config dependent)
Utility / Builder
Convenience kits for building sessions and base maintenance.
- Building plan + hammer
- Common building utilities
- Meant to save trips, not skip costs
Event / PvE Ready
Loadouts intended for PvE content (zombies, NPCs, events), usually with cooldowns to keep things fair.
- Combat supplies (config dependent)
- Typically has cooldowns/limits
- Designed to be “good enough,” not “best in slot”
How to view / claim kits
- List kits: usually
/kits - Claim a kit: click in the UI or use the kit name
- Cooldowns: most kits have cooldowns to prevent spam
Fairness rules (simple)
- Kits should not create “god mode” power gaps.
- If a kit feels too strong, report it — we’ll balance it.
- Don’t chain-claim kits to feed other players unfairly.
Quality-of-Life Commands (Common)
The day-to-day stuff that makes PvE smoother.
Rusting Away includes several QoL plugins that help with travel, building flow, storage/loot friction, and cosmetics. Below are the common ones you’ll notice most often.
Travel & positioning
- NTeleportation: teleport commands (home / tpr-style, server configured)
Teleport is convenience. It typically includes cooldowns and restrictions so it doesn’t trivialize events.
Building flow
- BGrade: upgrade multiple pieces quickly
- RemoverTool: remove mistakes within limits
- AutoDoors: auto-close doors so you don’t get “oops’d”
- AntiLadderandTwig: reduces cheesy ladder/twig abuse
These are “time savers,” not “resource printers.” You still pay build costs and follow building rules.
Loot & crafting friction
- StackEverything: larger stack sizes (config based)
- FurnaceUpgrades: furnace QoL upgrades (config based)
- RecyclerSpeed + ExtendedRecycler: recycler QoL
- FastLoot: faster looting UI interactions
- AutoPickupBarrel: quick pickup for barrel loot (if enabled)
These reduce time spent staring at UI screens so you can focus on exploration and PvE fights.
Cosmetics & creativity
- SkinBox: skins/cosmetics management (server configured)
- SignArtist: add images/art to signs (rules apply)
Cosmetic features don’t increase combat power — they’re here to make bases look awesome.
Community & economy
- Economics: server currency layer (events/rewards)
- Shop: server shop (what’s sold depends on wipe rules)
- DailyRewards + RustRewards: login/reward systems
- Clans: group management
If something in the shop feels off-balance, tell us. PvE should feel rewarding, not “wallet-gated.”
Events & PvE content (FYI)
- RaidableBases, Convoy, BossMonster, PlaneCrash, DungeonEvents
- NightZombies, WalkingDead, ZombieHorde, ZombieHunter
These aren’t “QoL,” but they’re why QoL exists — to keep the action flowing.
/backpack vs /bp).
If something doesn’t work, run /help and look for the plugin name.
Server-Balanced vs Convenience
Where we draw the line (and how we prevent pay-to-win).
✅ Convenience (generally OK)
- Extra carry space (Backpacks) with limits
- Teleport with cooldowns/restrictions (NTeleportation)
- Build helpers that still require resources (BGrade)
- Faster recycling/looting (RecyclerSpeed, FastLoot)
- Cosmetics (SkinBox, SignArtist)
⚖️ Balanced power (watched closely)
- Kits: must not outclass normal progression
- Rewards/shops: must not bypass effort completely
- Event loot: tuned to difficulty and participation
- Anything that shifts power too far gets adjusted
