Economy & Money How to Earn and Spend Wisely on Rusting Away
Players always ask: “How do I make money fast?” Good news: you earn cash from doing almost anything. The real trick is spending smart and using the Bank correctly (it’s for wipe-safe items, not money).
At a Glance
The short version: how to get rich without wasting your rewards.
You earn cash from gameplay
Cash rewards come from doing stuff on the server — it adds up fast if you play actively.
Shop is where you spend
Use /shop to buy items and conveniences. Spend to save time and effort.
Bank is for wipe-safe items
/bank stores approved items safely across our monthly server wipes.
Avoid money traps
Impulse buys and “cool but useless” items are the #1 reason players stay broke.
Economy Basics (What We Use)
How money works here: earn rewards, spend in the shop, protect items with the bank.
Rusting Away’s economy is built around two main commands: /shop (spend your cash) and /bank (store wipe-safe items). You earn cash from doing pretty much anything thanks to our rewards system, so the focus is earning consistently and spending intentionally.
Commands we use
- /shop — browse & buy items
- /bank — deposit/withdraw wipe-safe items
Note: We do not use /bal or /sell on Rusting Away.
What the Bank is (and isn’t)
- Bank = item storage designed for monthly wipe protection
- Bank is not a wallet — it’s for approved items you want to keep safe
- Deposit valuables before wipe so you can withdraw after
Best Money-Making Activities
Cash comes from doing almost anything — here are the best “earn per hour” habits.
Beginner (easy + consistent)
- Farm a simple loop (roads, barrels, monuments you can handle)
- Recycle efficiently (less downtime = more rewards over time)
- Build smart (organized base = faster resets between runs)
- Do small events you can finish without dying
Mid game (best time/value)
- Event rotation: chain events back-to-back instead of wandering
- NPC content with reliable clears (bring meds)
- Group runs (split roles, clear faster)
- Better travel means more activities per session
End game (big sessions)
- Hard events you can clear consistently
- Boss-style content when you’re geared and stocked
- Speed clears: the goal is completing more content per hour
- Zero downtime (bring supplies so you don’t reset constantly)
The “fast money” rule (Rusting Away)
Because cash is earned broadly, the fastest money comes from consistency: pick one loop you can clear cleanly, run it repeatedly, and spend only on upgrades that make that loop faster.
What actually slows your income
- Dying repeatedly in content you’re not ready for
- Wandering without a plan (low activity completion)
- Buying “cool” stuff that doesn’t help you clear faster
- Not prepping kits/supplies before you head out
What to Spend On First
A simple priority list so your money always helps you progress.
A good “first spending” plan
- Buy what keeps you alive + clearing content
- Then buy one upgrade that makes your main loop faster
- Keep a cushion so you can restock after a bad run
When to use the Bank
- Before monthly wipe: deposit eligible valuables you want to keep
- When you have something rare/expensive you don’t want to risk
- When your base is “done” and you’re thinking long-term
Common Wasteful Mistakes
If you’re always broke, it’s usually one of these.
Buying expensive stuff before you’re stable
If you can’t clear content consistently yet, pricey purchases turn into regret fast. Build a steady loop first.
Impulse shopping
The shop is fun — but random buys drain your ability to restock essentials when you actually need them.
Forgetting the monthly wipe timeline
If you want certain valuables protected, bank eligible items ahead of time instead of scrambling last minute.
Chasing hard content too early
Hard events only pay if you complete them. Repeated deaths = lost time (and slower earning overall).
No kit prep = lots of downtime
Running back and forth for meds/ammo wastes your session. Prep a kit so you can chain activities.
Confusing Bank with money storage
Bank is for wipe-safe items. Use /shop for spending — and protect valuables by depositing them.
